(more)Re-enacting the first leg of the famous England-Australia race (not including the emergency landing at Kirkuk that was needed in real life). ‘Real weather’ for the actual date called up lots of wind and some great cloudscapes. I’ve always been fascinated by that race; easy for me, of course, in my comfortable chair with VORs to navigate by, GPS on call, and even my home-made autopilot to do most of the flying. God knows how testing (and literally ‘death-defying’) it must have been for the actual blokes, Scott and Campbell-Black; and all the other competitors. (less)
